What Is a Learnership?
A Learnership is a structured vocational education and training programme that integrates theory and practical workplace experience, leading to a nationally recognised qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Unlike traditional study paths, learnerships are designed to align directly with specific occupations or fields of work. For example, the National Certificate in Professional Driving prepares learners for careers as qualified truck or bus drivers.
How Learnerships Work
Learnerships combine:
Theoretical training delivered by an accredited education and training provider.
Practical, hands-on experience gained in the workplace under the guidance of a mentor. Together, these elements create a comprehensive learning pathway that develops both knowledge and real-world skills. All learnerships are overseen by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), which ensure that programmes are aligned with industry needs and lead to NQF-recognised qualifications. Typically, a learnership consists of 120+ credits (around 1,200 notional hours) – equivalent to a one-year full-time college or university course.
Upon successful completion of all assessments, learners are awarded a nationally recognised qualification with a formal certificate indicating the area of specialisation.
Benefits for Learners
- Gain a nationally recognised qualification relevant to your sector.
- Improve your employability with both workplace experience and academic knowledge.
- Enter into a fixed-term employment contract for the duration of the programme.
- Develop job-relevant skills that improve your performance and confidence.
- Receive a learner allowance while completing the programme.
- Enhance your opportunities for employment or self-employment after completion.
Termination of a Learnership
A learnership agreement can be terminated in certain circumstances:
- When the agreed duration of the programme ends.
- If both the learner and employer agree in writing to end the agreement (or if approved by the SETA that registered it).
- If the learner is fairly dismissed due to misconduct or incapacity.
In short, a learnership gives you the unique opportunity to learn, earn, and gain valuable work experience, setting you up for long-term career success or entrepreneurship.
